Sudhir Patwardhan

Sudhir Patwardhan

Sudhir Patwardhan graduated in Medicine from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in
1972. A practicing radiologist, Patwardhan is a visual artist whose work predominantly
centres on cityscapes, with individuals in their commonplace exactitudes encompassing the
characters of his narrative. He held his first solo exhibition of paintings in Delhi at E.Alkazi`s
art gallery Art Heritage in 1979. This exhibition was then held in Jehangir Art Gallery,
Mumbai. Sudhir Patwardhan`s work concerns with one lyrically colossal panorama of an
urban location. He has unrelentingly evolved his figurative style in expressionist drawings on
one hand and enormous elaborate oil paintings of town and cityscapes on the other. His
narrative has certain sameness, of the anonymous individual, possibly a migrant, directly
confronted by the challenges of the city. Patwardhan`s characters may be ordinary but they
are exalted by their struggle for survival. Apart from several solo show he has participated in
international exhibitions like 'Aspects of Modem Indian Art' Oxford, U.K. 1982; Contemporary
Indian Art, festival of India, London, 1982; Seven Indian Artists, Hamburg, West Germany,
1982; Contemporary Indian Art, Festival of India, New York, 1985; Festival of India, Center
George Pompidou, Paris 1986 and 'Coupe de Coeur' Geneva, 1987. His paintings are in
many public and private collections including The National of Modern Art, New Delhi; Lalit
Kala Academy, New Delhi; Punjab University Museum, Chandigarh; Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal;
Gallery of Contemporary Art, Kochi; Peabody Essex Museum, Mass. USA. and the Herwitz
Family Collection, USA.
